Earthquake in Haiti

When we hear of such natural disasters as has happened in Haiti, we can at times feel powerless to help.  But we can do two very constructive things:

    • We can pray - do not underestimate the power of prayer
    • We can give money to relief agencies who are on the ground working to rescue survivors and helping people to get established again with with basics for life.

Here is a prayer from Christian Aid to help us to pray for the people of Haiti after the tragic recent earthquake. Followed by the details of how you can donate to the Disasters Emergency Committee - who are the UK's leading aid agencies working together to maximise fundraising and get it to where it's needed, fast.

A prayer for Haiti

Loving God of creation,
at this time of devastation
we hold before you the people of Haiti.
When the damage is unimaginable,
and the suffering seems overwhelming,
remind us that every person affected
is loved, honoured and precious in your sight.
We remember all those who have been hurt;
all who have lost their homes, livelihoods and loved ones.
Work through us to bring healing
to broken and distorted lives,
peace to those who have been thrown into despair,
light to those in darkness,
and hope to those who fear.
We ask this in the name of Jesus
in whom all life and grace is found. Amen

Focus on the work of Mission Aviation Fellowship

ABC is pleased to support the work of MAF through regular prayer and giving.  MAF supports many ministries in hard-to-reach places throughout the world.  Its small aircraft efficiently speed medical and relief supplies and personnel to places they are needed.  It helps to spread the gospel by flying in mission partners, church workers, Bible translators and others.  Where roads are impossible or no-existent, MAF is a lifeline.

As part of our 2009 Advent giving, we were able to enable the purchase of a MIG welder for one of MAF' workshops in Uganda.

MIG WelderA MIG welder like this costs about £330,and enables many essential repairs of aircraft and vehicles to take place.

Please pray for the work of MAF

  • For the mission staff of MAF Uganda – pilots, engineers, radio operators and others. Thank God for their skills and their willingness to use them in His service; pray for safety, stamina, patience and wisdom in making difficult technical decisions
  • For the families of those who fly in difficult terrains
  • For the medical staff
  • For  patients who fly in MAF planes - for their healing and recovery
  • For those flying in to bring relief expertise - water engineers, agriculturalists, builders
  • For mission workers, Bible teachers and translators who are flown in the "reach the unreached"

MAF works in several countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

More about Mission Partnerships at Ampthill Baptist Church

We consider it an important part of our ministry at ABC to commit to mission partnerships a significant part of our prayer and concern, financial budget and practical support.

Vision for Mission Team
Vision for Mission Team 2009

Why Mission?

The last great command that Jesus gave to his followers was that they should go to all peoples everywhere, making them his disciples, and teaching them to obey his commandments.

We believe that God loves the whole world and wants every person to discover this great love. We also believe that God desires justice, wholeness and wellbeing for each person and community.

The amazing thing is that God has called every Christian believer into partnership with him in bringing his 'Kingdom' of peace and love throughout the world.  We do this through our partnerships, prayers, giving, going and sending.

Partnerships

For our global msision to be effective and meaningful, it needs to be focussed.  For that reason, we at ABC have decided to concentrate our support, and to work at making real partnerships to which we are committed.

Prayers

We pray for our mission partners individually, in small groups and when we meet together as a church fellowship. Our monthly 'Prayer Pointers' leaflet gives prayer suggestions. Visit the Prayer page to download the latest prayer pointers

Giving

We aim to allocate 20% of the finance donated to ABC to mission partnerships at home and abroad.

Going

We are all called 'GO'. Some of our ABC family have been called to go to Angola, Benin,
Sri Lanka, Uganda or Albania.  All of us have been called to serve our neighbours, friends and
family in the Name of Christ.

Sending

We send out mission partners into all the world.  That gives us the responsibility of praying, caring, communicating, listening, providing, giving and sharing in their mission task.
